Where facial tension hides

Most people hold tension in three places: the forehead (screen time and eye strain), the jaw (stress and clenching), and the temples (stress headaches). The cool stone and consistent pressure of a jade roller make it an effective massage tool for all three. You do not need a separate expensive gadget—your roller already works.

Forehead tension

Use the large end. Starting between your eyebrows, roll upward and outward toward your temples. Repeat 5-10 times. Then place the small end at your forehead center and hold for 10 seconds while breathing deeply. Move to each temple area and repeat. People who work at computers all day usually carry most of their tension here.

Temple massage

Use the small end in small circles at each temple. This is where the temporalis muscle attaches—it is a common site of tension headaches. Apply light pressure. The temple area is delicate and contains significant blood vessels. Stop if you feel any pain or dizziness.

Jaw release

Open your mouth slightly. Find the masseter muscle—the thick muscle that bulges when you clench your jaw. It runs from your cheekbone to your jawbone. Use the small end in slow circles directly on the muscle, working from the chin area up toward the ear. This is where people who grind their teeth at night get the most relief. Some people do this for 2-3 minutes per side and notice significantly less morning jaw tightness.

Base of skull

Hold the large end of your roller against the base of your skull where your neck meets your head. Apply gentle but firm pressure and hold for 15-30 seconds. This targets the suboccipital muscles, which are a major source of tension headaches and neck stiffness. You can also gently roll this area with small strokes if holding feels uncomfortable.

When to skip therapeutic rolling

During an active migraine—the stimulation can worsen it. If you have a headache that came on suddenly and severely—that could be serious. During any facial infection or active skin condition. If pressing on an area causes sharp pain—that is a signal to stop and seek medical attention rather than massage through it.
